We would drive up to Calvin Crest most weekends
when we sponsored the camp program. On this particular weekend we had to get back
home by Sunday. We left the camp
grounds around 10 p.m. that Saturday night after the evening program. We
usually went down Hwy. 41 towards Madera to get home to Modesto. While driving down the mountain side, smoke
began to come out from under the front hood of the car. We decided to go straight towards Fresno
because it was closer than Modesto.
Richard’s parents lived in Fresno so we would have a place to stay. However, the station wagon stalled and we had
to pull over to the right side of the road.
Richard got out and put the hood up
and we realized we were near the bridge going towards Fresno. We waited in the car with the three children
sleeping in the back of the station wagon. It was late and as we were trying to
decide what to do, a VW bug pulled over in front of our car. There were two college-age students in the
car. They asked if they could help as
they were going to Fresno. Richard gave
them our Triple A card and asked them to go to a gas station that was open and
ask them to send a tow truck.
We realized it would be at least an
hour since we knew the bridge was about a half hour to Fresno. After about an hour and a half we saw the VW
bug coming towards us. The couple said
that when they went to the gas station, they were told that the station could
not send a tow truck for us because we were on the wrong side of the
bridge. We were in Madera County not
Fresno County. So these two college
students drove all the way back to where we were, pushed our station wagon
across the bridge with their VW bug and went back to the gas station to tell
them we were now on the right side of the bridge.
The tow truck came and took us to
Fresno. We arrived at our parents’ home around 2 a.m. A reminder that there are
wonderful, caring people in this world.
We were grateful!
There are good people in the world. Did you catch their names? Or ever see them again?
