We had the
wonderful experience of getting to know Henrietta Mears. She was the Christian Education Director at
The Hollywood Presbyterian Church. She
was one of the key persons responsible for buying the Forest Home Christian Conference
Center in the San Bernardino Mountains.
She had much to say about developing the programs at the camp.
Richard and I invited
the Forest Home Staff along with Miss Mears to an Armenian shish ke-bob dinner at our home one evening. We had a great
time. She was a very present person. You knew what se believed and why. She used to say, “If I had a
chance to live my life over, I would believe God more.”
Richard had
a very significant experience one summer at Forest Home.
Miss Mears invited Oral Roberts to come and speak with the staff. It was not common to have charismatic
preachers at Forest Home. After lunch
she asked Rev. Roberts to pray over each staff person. When he came to Richard
he said something like, “You are like Peter, the Rock, and God will bless your
ministry.” Again, little did we know that this was good training for our future
in camping.
