A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Camp - 5C – CALVIN CREST CAMP AND CONFERENCE GROUNDS

In the early 60’s Richard accepted a position as a Counselor at the Community College in  Coalinga, California.  One of our best friends, Ted Lyons, was the Pastor of the Presbyterian Church.  He was on the Calvin Crest Camp and Conference Board of San Joaquin Presbytery.   The Board also had representatives from Stockton Presbytery.
Calvin Crest is located about an hour south of the entrance to Yosemite National Park, near Bass Lake and about an hour and a half North East of Fresno, California.
Ted recruited Richard to serve on the Board especially since he had five years experience on staff at Forest Home.  The Board was making significant decisions regarding the future of the camp facility.  The camp facility was not being used to its fullest potential.  The Board, after much discussion, prayer and many meetings, decided to move forward and develop a facility as well as a program to serve the churches.  Luke Fritz, a Pastor in the Presbytery, was the Chairperson of the Board and Richard, was serving as the Chairperson of the Program Committee at the time.  (Next blog – “New Direction for the Camp.”)
